West Coast Swing Madrid nace con el objetivo de promocionar este baile en la Comunidad de Madrid. Pero, ¿qué es el West Coast Swing y qué lo hace tan especial?
It is a partner dance with roots in the Lindy Hop. It is a slotted dance, which means that the steps of the dance are confined to an imaginary 'slot'on the dance floor. It is characterized by an elastic look and allowing for both partners to improvise steps while dancing together, putting West Coast Swing in a short list of dances that emphasize improvisation. The follower has an active role, being able to adapt their own interpretation of the music to the leader's movements, either strictly following their guide or proposing an improvisation to which the leader will adapt.
Its origins lie in the West Coast of the United States, during the 1930s (it is the official dance of the State of California), and it has spread around the world since then. Although it is not too well known in Spain, it is really popular in other European countries, United Kingdom, Russia, Poland, and specially France.
Its adaptability makes it really unique. It can be danced to a variety of musical styles and genres: from soul or RnB to pop, funk or disco. Basically it can be danced to any 4/4 time music, and would look different depending on the song.
